Crusta et Stratum: Time, Space, and Memory

Crusta et Stratum—shell and layer—carries not only its own form but also the memory of the space in which it is placed. As the shell’s protective surface meets the traces of the past, the roofless body of the Esma Sultan Mansion stands before us as a site of memory.

The shell (Crusta) is not merely a surface that shields architecture from environmental factors; it also functions as a logbook that preserves the traces of history. The layer (Stratum), in turn, is the materialized embodiment of successive historical processes accumulated within the mansion’s load-bearing walls.

With its interwoven forms, the sculpture makes visible the conceptual space between protection and revelation, concealment and remembrance. Offering the viewer an opportunity to reread the memory of the space, Crusta et Stratum evolves into a kind of memory architecture; bringing together shell and layer, space and time, individual trace and collective memory.
